Back To School

All around the blogosphere folks are talking “Back-To-School”. As you know, I’m getting ready to send two kids off to college. Well folks, let me tell you the difference between “Regular” Back-To-School shopping and “I’m leaving for College” Back-To- School shopping.

Ahem:

Regular: Backpack.

Pre-College: Sheets, towels, pillows, mattress pad, shower caddy, waste basket, laundry basket, stackable storage unit, under-bed storage unit, flash light, desk lamp, alarm clock, adhesive hooks….

Regular : Glue, folders, binders, notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, notebook paper, graph paper.

Pre-College: Folders, notebooks, pens, pencils, markers, printer paper, dry erase board, bulletin board, magnets, push pins, tool box, sewing kit, lint roller, batteries, post-its….

Regular: Calculator.

Pre-College: Microwave, refrigerator, flat screen TV with DVD player....

Regular: Box of tissues, roll of paper towels.

Pre-College: Boxes of tissues, tampons, pads, Aleve, Band-aids, Neosporin, cough drops, Nyquil, shampoo, conditioner, brush, comb, soap, razors, deodorant, tooth paste, tooth brush, lotion, laundry soap, dryer sheets….

Turns out feathering the empty nest ain’t cheap folks!

Yikes! I'm happy to still be dealing with elementary school lists.

This is me with my fingers in my ears - our college students swarm back to town in 17 days and I'm not ready to face that fact yet.

Flat screen?? If I go away to college, will you buy me a flat screen?

thanks for doing my list for me! I was sitting here earlier trying to write everything down and Viola! I read your blog and see my list - readymade.

Of course, I can leave tampons off. ;-)

Ain't that the truth. Although with boys you can dispense with anything decorative--and that is a savings.

Okay, I'm SO relieved that we only need to grab shoes and notebooks. But I always thought those college kids were kind of demanding diva types. Pfft. Bedding. Laptop. Shampoo. Whatever.

Stop...you're scaring me. Really, a flat screen? I had no TV in my dorm room first semester of my freshman year, and it sucked. So I asked my parents for a TV for Christmas. They got me a 13" black and white. I thought that was kind of lame, even for 1985. I'm pretty sure there was color TV then. But looking at it from this side now, they were probably totally broke from supporting me.

ACK.

Remember when we thought the list of supplies for 1st grade was huge?

Oh good lord! I keep asking the Freshman's eldest what she needs for her room, and she's only come up with a shower caddy, sheets, and pens and highlighters. I guess all the rest of that stuff will come as "last minute emergencies."

Having put three through college, I feel your pain. It's like maintaining multiple households.
